I’m excited to share the fifth installment of my “12 Shades” series, where each year I select a single location and photograph the same landscape every month for twelve months. I thought last year was challenging, but this year proved even tougher. Stress and management changes at work made it difficult to plan much of anything—but this project kept me motivated. Each month, it pushed me to get outside, chase light and clouds, and create the twelve long-exposure images that complete this series.
If you’re new to long-exposure photography, here’s a quick explanation: it’s a technique that uses a slow shutter speed to capture an image over an extended period of time. This allows stationary elements to appear crisp and sharp, while moving elements—like water or clouds—become blurred, streaked, or smoothed into a soft, dreamlike effect.
Jersey City offers one of the best vantage points to experience the iconic New York City skyline. Sitting directly across the Hudson River, it provides sweeping, unobstructed views that rival any other spot. In this post, I’m sharing 12 images that showcase the beauty of the skyline, with the Freedom Tower standing tall and timeless. All photos were taken from the Lefrak Lighthouse area in Jersey City—a perfect place not only for photography but also for strolling, walking, jogging, or simply enjoying the stunning views of New York City.
